Is there any reason why I’m unable to initially send an sms? I can receive them and reply to them. But when I pull up my contacts, hit text phone,I type a message and then I am able to hit send 100 times but nothing happens. Maybe I did something wrong or am not understanding the scope of the app and google voice? Im using a samsung focus

    December 17, 2010 at 10:41 am

    • Hi Isom,
Its a bug. thanks for reporting. It seems due to some reason the application bar click is not happening in this situation. I will look into this and submit a fix (possibly today). It should be available on marketplace in few days (depending on the certification). Sorry about this.
In the meantime, if you type the number using phone pad, and click on text, its working that way.

ps – Update has been submitted for certification.

Thanks for the reply. Thats cool. I dont plan on purchasing any other google voice apps as I like yours and will wait for the fix.

Sidenote: Do you plan on deving (im sure that is not a word) any other projects for windows phone 7? I saw the torrent app you made and its pretty good. Im looking for something for usenet (SABNZB) and an app that works like idisplay for the apple products? Keep up the good work. Hope you are making good money.

Hi, I purchased your app and like it.
For some reason when I text or call my contacts, it doesn’t retain the contact in the history (recent screen), just the “location”.
So rather than a person’s name, it says “Bellevue, WA”. Because I cannot recall everyone’s phone number, it’s really hard to figure out who the conversation is with since it’s only displaying the location. Is there any way to fix this?

    December 24, 2010 at 5:00 pm

    • Hello, This is because the google contacts and your local phone contacts are not combined togeather and windows phone doesn’t provide that information to show your contact name from local contact list.
One way to see your contacts friendly name is to add your contact to your google voice contact list. I believe your should be able to import all the contacts as well. As long as the contact is in your google contact list, it should show the Name.

Let me know if that doesn’t work and thanks for trying the app.

I am using this on the Samsung Focus and it looks great, but after I login it will say it cannot get my gv messages and it states there might be a network problem or my auth tokens expired. Is it my end or something else? Merry Christmas too!

    December 24, 2010 at 7:28 pm

    • Hi, where you ever able to login? If not, I am not sure. May be some thing specific to your account. Can you provide me more information on this? Can you try uninstalling and reinstalling?
Thanks for your feedback and a very Merry Christmas to you as well.

This app does have better featurs than GoVoice but worthless, won’t let you log in if you are Google Apps user with custom domain.

    December 26, 2010 at 3:25 pm

    • Thanks for your feedback. Yes this issue is known and currently an update for the fix is in certification testing. I hope you will give it a try when you get the next update. (Just FYI.. if you have a trial version, WP7 marketplace doesn’t update, you will have to uninstall and install).

    1. No matter what I do, I cannot get push notification to work (yes, I have purchased the app). I have a gvmax account, checked and double-checked my filters. The test SMS works. Everything looks fine but Free Talk does not send me push notifications.

    2. Whenever I check the push notifications checkbox in settings, when I attempt to save the settings, I get the message “failed to open channel”. But if I go back into settings, it looks like push is selected.

    3. If I hit the “more” arrow in the inbox to get more messages, I get the error “getting messages failed. Please check your network connections and try again.” If I exit the app then restart, it works the first time I hit the arrow, then fails the second time.

I guess #1 is the most important to me, since that’s why I bought the app! Any way to get this working?

    I just downloaded your trial.

I want to confirm that your app used a callback model for making calls.

I am in Canada, have US Google Voice number, my carrier provides free incoming calls.

It seems like the app does call my phone back, please confirm.

Also, do you support the use of bluetooth headsets, if yes, how do I configure?

    Hey Guys,

I’m an Australian user of Windows Phone 7. I was looking for a voice client application which would allow me to call internationally using my data connection. However, when I try and join it up with my Gmail account through the website https://www.google.com/voice it advises me that this service isn’t available for my locality. I was wondering whether this was a software bug or whether your services are not available to Australian Windows Phone 7 users?

    February 15, 2011 at 11:23 pm

    • I believe google voice is not available in australia. you can try creating an account for US based email address.

hey, fantastic job on this. my question is, with the trial freetalk, is sms free? because when i receive a message, it shows up in my messages box. is that free?

    April 10, 2011 at 11:53 am

    • Hi, yes, the Sms should be free. If you are receiving it in your SMS, then you must have configured google voice to send you SMS on new message notification. Make sure to turn that off other wise you will get charged for incoming SMS by your provider.
Freetalk will send you notification only in paid version (using push notification which is no charge from providers)

I have the paid version of Free Talk, have a GVMAX account and have Checked the the box ‘Send HTTP Post Notifications’ supplying the Post URLs as ‘http://ashterisk.com/freetalk/notification.aspx’. When I send a Test SMS message I do get an email notification, but never receive a Free Talk notification.

Is there something else I need to set up to receive these Free Talk notifications?

Hi. I like this app but there are too many key strokes needed to place a simple call. Can this be changed? Right now I have to select the contact, select text or call, click OK to dial, then answer the callback. This is pretty tedious for me on days when I’m constantly calling people.

    Thanks,

Hey there, ‘ashterisk’. Thanks for making this app available. As someone that exclusively uses Google Voice, once I gave the trial a go it was clear that this GV app was the best one in the Marketplace (despite a different recommendation that I was not as satisfied with). Had no problem paying for this and am glad I did.

Of course every app leaves room for improvement, and many here have already discussed a lot of relevant additions or changes that would make this even more valuable.

My question, though, is if the Mango update will improve the functionality and integration of this app even further? In particular I was curious about the voice-to-text features and if those can or will be integrated into your next update.

Thanks for your efforts again and I hope WP7 has been and continues to be a fruitful endeavor for you.

    September 2, 2011 at 6:30 pm

    • Thanks for your nice comments. I have not started on mango update just yet. The reason is if I release a mango update, it will freeze the 7.0 app and I will not be able to update it at all. But irrrespective, feedback like your decide what goes in the next update. I will keep your suggestion in mind and see what I can do.

        Hello astersik,

i am having problems with the phone app. I always get the message: error – could not download settings, please try again later. I did set up the google voice account which worked fine. I have a gv phone number and the number the calls should be forwarded to. But the app will always give me the same error message. Any idea?

        Thanks

        Simon

        October 4, 2011 at 8:01 am

      • Hi Simon, I am assuming you already went thru google voice web and configured properly? I can’t think of any reason if you have a properly configured account which you can access from google voice web.
I will look into this and will update the app to include more logging. Hopefully that will help.

downloaded the trial to check function before paying for the app. So far so good, did the Google Voice set up, that worked fine, have a new google phone number and a forward phoen number which is my mobile. The app is installed on the phone (LG C900). As I am starting the app and hit “settings” the status bar showes me “error – could not retreive informaton” and then “error – could not download settings. Please try again later”. Please advise.

    October 3, 2011 at 6:45 pm

    • simon, were you able to figure out the issue? I am suspecting some setup issue as part of google voice account.

      October 25, 2011 at 7:55 pm

  33. Hi,

Any news on a Mango update? I’ve been using the GoVoice app but the developer is unresponsive. My main concern is having to refresh every time I open the app. I’m used to messages being there instantly on Android and the experience is a little lacking.

    Thanks

    October 4, 2011 at 11:21 am

  34. Add me to the “Current Operation Failed… Please check network and try again” group.
Does loading Mango break the app? I recently upgraded.

    October 25, 2011 at 2:04 pm

    • Tjarren

I’ve never had any Mango issues. It works just the same for me as before with no changes whatsoever.

That being said, still looking forward to a Mango update for this app. So hoping we’ll be able to use the cool Voice-to-Text features, but I’m sure that all will depend on if developers have access to those features for 3rd party apps. Here’s to hoping …

      October 25, 2011 at 7:30 pm

      • I am definetly planning a mango update soon.
That said, the voice to text conversion should already be available to you from google. The app support displaying the converted text.
Let me know if these is something not clear.

        thanks,

        October 25, 2011 at 7:53 pm

    • No, the app should work fine on mango.

      October 25, 2011 at 7:54 pm

  35. Tjarren

Sorry, ash, if I wasn’t clear. I do not use my carrier’s number for calls or texting. Everything runs through my GV number (I do not have a texting plan). With Mango you can use the voice features of WP7.5 to make calls, read incoming text messages and respond/send text messages just using your voice (you probably know all of this, but I’m just being thorough).

If I understand it correctly, currently these features are only available on native applications and therefore if used will only work with the phone’s (carrier’s) number and will not be routed through the FreeTalk app. Is this correct? And if so, is this something that can be added with the numerous new API’s that are now accessible with 7.5?

Thanks again for the open communication.

    October 25, 2011 at 8:13 pm

    • Ahh, I see. Yes those are going to be harder for 3rd party apps to support natively. Not all these are available thru APIs.

I just purchased the full version after trying the trial for about an hour. I got the push working through gv but the application keeps giving me a message that it is on a trial but is receiving pushes. Is there something I can do to remove the message?

    October 29, 2011 at 5:23 pm

    • I believe you are still using the trial version. If you downloaded the freetalk (free) version then when purchasing, it downloads a different app which you will have to use. Please check to see if you see 2 free talk apps in your applicaton list.

    November 11, 2011 at 11:50 am

    • This is normal. Google voice keeps track of threaded conversations so when you send a message, you get a new conversation started in your inbox, that’s what its refering to.

      November 11, 2011 at 5:01 pm

When I place an outgoing call my own phone is ringing instead! It is like FreeTalk is calling itself. Has anyone seen this? Any ideas what is the cause or how to solve it? thanks

    November 21, 2011 at 11:33 am

    • Nicholas

I figured it out, FreeTalk is calling my phone first and if I pickup, then the call to the target number is placed. It is as if FreeTalk conferences the two numbers in. Is this by definition? This is not how the GV app (for iPhone/Android/etc) does it.

    • I meant the push notification part. As of now, I don’t have plan for changing that part.
BTW, you can try the application free, see if it works per your expectation. The only part which doesn’t work in trial is push notifications but all other things you can verify (liek SMS or phone call).

Please note, google voice doesn;t support direct phone calls over wi-fi. so phone calls means you pay your local outgoing or incoming rate depending on the option you choose.

Not sure if this helps, but I’m using an HTC HD7. I have the PAID version of this app, and live tile updates and notifications do not work. I tried a test SMS which works, but it doesn’t give me a notification for Free Talk. I also setup notifications in the account settings. I hope you can figure this out.

        December 20, 2011 at 11:10 am

      • Can you make sure that the filters are setup correctly in your email account?

        December 20, 2011 at 1:26 pm

      • Reony Tonneyck

My filters are set up correctly. I just tested them again.

        Look here, I took a screenshot: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v250/jaminroe/Untitled-1.jpg

        December 20, 2011 at 6:33 pm

      • And I am assuming you have selected the option in the app to receive push notifications. As long as in Google voice you Adelaide forwarding to gmail and have proper filter defined, you should get notifications.

So have you figured it out or going to make a fix for this? I just had to repurchase the app and I’ve reinstalled and its not working still. I’m telling you, I have not changed a single thing since the last major update before December…

One other thing….SO to be sure I understand how this all works, as is noted in your website …I can send /receive text & voice calls for free, with no charges from say,,at&t which is who I have my wp7 ?

I just wanted to make sure, before trying this or getting my hopes up…

    thanks again

I’m about ready to give up on this app. I cannot get push notifications to work consistently. They work for a while, then they stop working. The new version is no better than the last.

    December 20, 2011 at 1:26 pm

    • Seth, what happens when they don’t work? Do you stop getting notifications or you get it sometimes but not always?

      December 20, 2011 at 1:29 pm

  53. Seth Manheim

They just stop working and I get no notifications. Sometimes uninstalling and reinstalling the app works, but lately it hasn’t. I’m not getting any push notifications anymore.

So first off i downloaded this thinking it would send things over WiFi and not require my cellular service. Am i wrong in thinking that? Because it only seems to work (and i use the word “work” very lightly) when i have cell service. Also the app on my phone looks absolutely nothing like the screen shots posted on this site. Im just trying to, and also the push notifications have not been popping up. This is like the fourth time ive uninstalled and reinstalled the app too, thinking something was just glitchy because before it wouldn’t even allow me to set up the app. I would sign in and then as soon as i did the app would just shut down. This problem was fixed when i got an actual google voice account, because i didn’t realize my normal Gmail account didnt work. Anyways im just having all kinds of problems, and i really wish there was just a hotline i could call so I could get it all sorted out.
I really like the idea of this app and am really eager to use it, but as of right now the app itself is not allowing me to do so. So assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    December 20, 2011 at 3:49 pm

    • Google voice doesn’t work using clip. Forvoiceall it does callback or have the option to make calls directly using shadow numbers. Its good for free SMS and international calling.
The screenshots are different because in the latest updatei changed the ux to reduce thenumberof clicks to do certain things.
For notifications, you need to follow the steps in account settings and make sure that filters are setup properly. You can also use auto configuration and it should do everything.

Is there really no other way to enable push notifications? This is hard to believe. The old version worked much better — is there any way to roll back to the original version?

    December 21, 2011 at 3:16 pm

    • Tjarren

Hi Seth. No affiliation to the app or ashterisk, but I just wanted to let you know that when I downloaded the new version, everything still worked without me changing anything. The app DOES work and, by all intents and purposes, works well for me. I’m using a Trophy on Verizon.

Sorry to hear you’re having these problems, but I just wanted to clear the air about the update’s ability to work. Hopefully you’ll be able to get this working right.

I really like the functionality and features. But isn’t there supposed to be a live tile with number of new SMS as well as toast notifications with the paid version? I enabled push notifications and did a test msg w/no toast or tile. Then I did the one-time gvmax setup, retried test SMS, still no notifications. Please help, thx.

App works great for me. I have a question about the new required settings. When I change the calling method the settings don’t remember my selection. Also the explanations are not very clear. Lastly, the mango release allowed apps to call over WiFi, so why is that not an option on your app? Love the app and keep up the good work. Don’t sweat the idiot comments here. You have a lot of happy customers.

    December 23, 2011 at 7:49 am

    • Thanks Bob. The wifi calling is not available by google voice. It doesn’t support that option. Regarding calling options they do remember but does not autonselect the options. If you notice at the bottom it does say what you selected. But going back will update it to you current selection.

I can text, but when I attempt to make a call, it says “Please finish the initial setup before you can make call”. I am using an HTC Mazaa (developer) Windows Phone. Please email me directly with any answers. Thanks.

    December 23, 2011 at 12:15 pm

    • When you login, the app should ask you to finish your initial setup. Basically it let you specify your forward number and calling option preference. You can select this option from main page app bar.

    • The number should reset afrer you opened the app. I have submitted a fix which should fix it. Please wait for the update to be available and see if the fixes your issue.

    Hi there,

I am looking to purchasing a windows phone 7. Currently I use an Android phone and the only thing tying me down to android is that I get all my SMS through google voice.

Obviously, forwarding a GV number to any phone is easy, but what I am concerned about is outgoing calls. I played around with your application in an AT&T store and it looks like you could do outgoing calls where you have a predetermined routing number. I was impressed; I thought only the official app would be capable of that.

That leaves me with one question. Is there a way to make the free talk dialer the default dialer? Such that my call histories and such are managed by free talk, and not what comes default on WP7. If not, is there a way to make the WP7 dialer use the predetermined routing numbers and keep to freetalk for the SMS component?

This is a very crucial factor in my decision, thanks for letting me know.

    December 28, 2011 at 7:39 pm

    • Thanks for trying. No, windows phone doesnt allow to change default dialer. You could probably use the routing numbers and call thru default dialer.

      December 28, 2011 at 10:19 pm

  63. Ive totally lost live tile update (number count on tile). I love the new live tile but its not updating. Thanks for changing the Tile to match the accent colors!!!
I have removed all filters and created new ones……but the live tile is still not working. I have recreated a new GVMax account but still the live tile is not working.
    Any suggestions I would appreciate!!!

Wondering why receiving SMS is not free? I have no problem sending and receiving SMS using the app. But receiving SMS shows on my Verizon bill.

    January 2, 2012 at 9:35 am

    • This is probably because in your google voice settings, you have it configured to send SMS remidner. You can turn it off thru google voice setting (https://google.com/voice)

what are the differences between free and paid version? I installed free and trial version, the interface is different to the screen shots – no panorama, no key pad. The most important thing is I can’t make a call using Google Voice compleletely (i.e. VoIP). The apps I installed have following calling method – shadow number, callback, bypass google voice, acess number, they all use my cell phone to make a call (using my airtime) instead of via 3G data/WIFI. Do I get a real VoIP app (not charged for airtime) if I buy the full version?

I have Gmax set up per the instructions and I have push notification checked on the application itself. I uninstalled the application and installed it again but that did not help either.

Hello, I have been using Free Talk on my first Win Phone and like it a great deal. I started with the free version and quickly upgraded to the paid version. I have been trying to find a way to create some sort of a “speed dial” list for the numbers that I most frequently call or txt. Is that function available? Also on my wish list is the integration of your app into the main dialer so that calls and txts can be initiated through the native dialer with histories, etc available.

    Thanks for developing the app.

I’m not sure it is me or someone else had this issue, all the calls that i made using the App, get’s on to my AT&T account and my minutes are counted against that.

Google voice talk free used my mins was not free u used 200 mins thinking it was going to be free like the app said

    January 30, 2012 at 1:10 pm

    • Google voice doesn’t suppot voip and use callback mechanism when making and recieving calls.
      SMS works on data.

      January 30, 2012 at 1:12 pm

    • Yeah. That’s just a misunderstanding of the Google Voice service. In laymans terms, Google Voice calls out from your phone to your GV number then forwards the call through it to whoever you’re trying to talk to. It’s nothing more than a management tool for phone calls.

I was loosing my minutes by using this app, my service was suspended due to non payment and I tried to use this app but was not able to use it. I recently bought a Sirius XM buddy app for my Windows phone and down loaded it. The first time I was able to log in and it down loaded the Sirius XM site and I tried to listen. It then sent a media content message error and would not play anything. I then retried again a short time later and now it wont even let me log in and try. What can I do to fix this or did I just get taken for a couple of dollars?

    Hi Asterisk,

On my HTD HD7S, with the paid version of the app, I have to login in every time I want to use this app. I don’t get incoming calls, I don’t get push notifications, because every time I set the phone down it seems to lose my login info. Is there a setting somewhere I missed, or is there a workaround to make this software retain my info and log me in without me having to retype my email and password dozens of times a day?

I’ve had this problem for months, but was hoping that there’d be a software update that would fix this, but no luck.

Are you aware of this issue, or am I doing something wrong?

    February 15, 2012 at 9:14 am

All this depends on how you want to use. Google voice doesn’t provide voip calling.

    • Hello, FreeTalk is a google voice client and require users to have a google voice account. Currently its only available in select countries inlcuding US. Users can signup for a free google account on http://google.com/voice.
Once they have signed up, they can use their username/pass with FreeTalk and it will let them send/recieve free SMS. Users can also make cheap international calls using googles callback mechanmism.
Please note – Freetalk doesn’t allow free voip calls.

    • You should be able to use over WIFI for text but for phone calls, you need cell phone service as google calls you back when connecting calls.

Your app has developed a critical error that makes it unusable now. When sending texts to someone, it often sends it to the wrong person. This can be disastrous. Usually, its to the person whose text you just read before…but not always. I paid for this app, and can no longer use it due to this. Please make this a priority for fixing. Installed on an HTC HD7 on using Tmobile USA as operator. Thanks.

I’m a little upset with this. I downloaded it and have been using it everyday for work calls. Well, it’s 9 days into the cycle and all 450 minutes are gone. I used the shadow number. I have a google voice number, but it’s not using that. It’s using my cell number. I guess it’s on to a new application.

i think this app may do what I want, but it assumes more familiarity with jargon than I have, and doesn’t define how the app works.
What I want: is an app that completely replaces the standard texting from my windows phone 7, that once set up works without having to do anything different, or at least not much than what I do now. (Go to contact or type in number, hit text, type and send). It should be free texting (meaning free to send, free to receive and free to the recipient) without having to pay ATT .20 per text or $30 per month. I need to know if I am using my phone or data minutes. (I typically have leftover minutes and data time – data usually is free because it connects to my wifi at home and at the office). I need notification of incoming texts when they arrive, just like the phone does now. I don’t mind paying to download an app, and I don’t mind signing up for a google voice account if that is what I need, but I don’t need another number, voice mail, syncing phones, or most of what google voice seems to be all about. I just want free texting. Also, I want to know whether this requires me to stay synced or have something “on” all the time that will use minutes, data or battery power. [I use manual synch only to check e-mails and I turn off all my other apps that want to update on their own or track me.] Thanks.

The push notifications are not working for me. I have a gvmax account and it is sending http post notifications to http://ashterisk.com/freetalk/Notification.aspx. GVMax tells me that does receive the SMS’s, so it must be a bug in between GVMax and FreeTalk. Can you confirm this and fix it? I have a Lumia 900. 218. I have a Samsung Focus sgh-i917 with Windows 7.5 latest updates. AT&T pay as you go plan. (GoPhone) I have been using Google Voice quite a while on my Android Devices and from My PC to make WIFI calls without charging minutes on my phone. But now, I have a new phone as described and I cannot get this app to make a call without charging me 10 cents a minute. I was under the assumption from the description that I would be able to make free WIFI calls through my GoogleVoice account like the android APP GrooveIP (and others). I cannot figure out how to get this Application to function without charging minutes. If this Application will in fact work for free WIFI calls through GoogleVoice, please direct me to the instructions on how to do this as I cannot find any documentation that covers this setup. Thanks..

  282. Hey Ashterisk,
The push notifications are not working for me. I have push notifications on in the settings of FreeTalk and I do have the paid version.
    Thanks
